My daughter is 2 mths old and just in a week her soft spot has almost fused together. What could happen?
She also has some mass right on top of the soft spot. She was born with this but it doubled in size in the last three weeks. Her doctor sent her to a plastic surgeon to remove it and he wouldnt touch it because of the soft spot. Now her doctor is sending her to a nuero surgeon but they say they cant get her in for a month and a half. I am worried because were the soft spot is fusing you can only fit maybe a pin in between the bone. What do I do to make them take this serious? Is this serious? I am making her doctor see her again but they have never even ran test on the thing that looks like a cyst or have even said what it could be.She got concerend about the size and said she wanted it off as soon as possible to biopsy. Now that the plastic surgeon whouldnt touch it she says oh dont worry this can wait awhile to be looked at by neuro. Please if any one knows,Im not even sleeping at night.

- i honestly would get this check out because sometimes the soft stop can harden and can be a sign of problems.... good luck
- be helpfull and see what happens ?? ok and tell me what happens ok??
- I'm so sorry but I am not up on peadiatric conditions. I really hope you get sorted really quickly. Keep bothering your Dr. Best wishes xxxx
- Go to another doctor. Keep going to doctors until you get answers. It is not acceptable that your infant can not get in to see a nerosurgon when she has a growth on her skull. Don't be worried about her soft spot growing toegterh this soon though it is to early for her soft spot to be fully closed over and anything that needs to be done to her in regard to the growth it is not going to be affected from the soft spot being closed over.
- i honestly would go in to another dr a specialist that can give you a second opinion on it. i wouldnt take it laying down if i was real concerned about the well being of my child. even if it takes a 3rd 4th 5th opinion keep taken her in till you can be reasurred or someone does something about it
- If you have concerns contact your doctor. you can also contact your local physicians hot line. You can also contact your State Medical Association, and ask them about your concerns.
- Aw, I am sooo sooo sorry. Do you think it would help if you took her to the emergency room? They might be able to look at it immediatley and see if it can be removed. I think the main problem with the soft spot fusing so fast is the brain needs the room to go and can become swollen. My nephew was almost like that, but the dr. said he would be ok. Good luck!!!
- My best friend has a little girl and at two months old her pediatrician told her to watch her soft spot because it was only about the size of a fingertip and they told her that if it closes up it could stop brain growth. Consult a different doctor immediately!!!
- Sounds awful for you. Poor thing. I can just imagine. I am hoping that the problem is in communication more than anything not taking it seriously. Make sure you take someone with you to the visit who can help you with the baby and also help you remember questions and answers if possible. Write down your questions as you think of them tonight and write down what they say. Questions off the top of my head: what do you think this mass is? how can we be sure? What could be the problems with the different possibilities? Do you think the spot is closing too fast? what can be the problems if it isn't treated quickly? Where else can I be referred for a quicker consult? Sometimes a doctors office can call and arrange a quicker consult if they think timing is important. Ask about that. Good luck. remember that lots and lots of babies have unusual medical problems early on and by the time they are in preschool the only thing left is a dramatic family story. I have three kids like that in my extended family. I'm hoping you will soon have the same kinds of problems we have with ours (cleaning rooms, not wanting to wear a jacket, etc.) good luck.
- dont lose sleep over it sweetheart!!!! my 6 month old son was born without any soft spot at all. when he was 3 months old we went and said a peds neurosurgeon. if the soft spot fuses too early, then they will have to do surgery on it. its not as scary as it sounds...promise!!! they do a series of xrays to make sure its fused and they arent doing surgery for nothing!!! after they get back for sure if it has fused or not, they will bring you in to have surgery on your daughter. they take her back and put her to sleep and make sure everything is ok...they cut her scalp (really..this sounds horriable..but it all turns out ok..i just dont want you going in and having it done and being in the dark like i was...) from ear to ear across the top of her head in a zig zag pattern so that when he hair grows out it will cover it. the go in and cut a hole in the skull to allow room for the brain to grow. they cut out the fused parts. if they dont do the surgery..the brain wont have anywhere to go so it will force the skull to grow in an un-normal fashion. they will stitch the head back up and the baby will go to the picu (pediactric intensive care unit) for one night. the next night you will stay in a normal room in the hospital..then you go home! depending on what hospital does the surgery (i live in georgia..so we went to MCG) some of them have the child wear a helmet for a few months. my son didn't have a helmet and he healed up perfectly!!! again..it sounds SO scary..but..it really isn't. it is for the best for your child and since they are so young..they wont remember any of it. They do the surgery between 3 and 6 months because they want them to be old enough for it but also want them young enough that it wont effect them as much. my son had it right around 3 months so he was just learning to roll over..so it wasn't causing him any problems with him trying ot crawl or anything. and for all you know---she might not even have ot have the surgerY!!!!!! i just wanted you to know that its a possibility and that if she does have it....it will be ok! its for the best--and they heal MUCH faster whent hey are this young. the mass on top of her head could be the sutures closing up which is just the soft spot closing prematurly so it causes a lump type thing on her head. my son had one on the back of his head, his forehead, and the top of his head. again...i promise it will be ok!!! your baby will heal quickly and perfectly and after she has the surgery..you wont have ot worry abou tit anymore! my son is healing just as he was supposed to and they said that it is a lifechanging operation! good luck..if you want to ask ANYTHING else about it---just email me ok?!
- You may be able to speed the pace by asking the pediatrician for a referral to a craniofacial team. Any large teaching hospital will have one. Barring that, there's really nothing to be concerned about with having to wait 6 weeks to see the neurosurgeon; her brain won't grow so fast that it will run out of room in the skull in 6 weeks. Believe me, if there was a problem with waiting, they would have found a way to see your daughter. Every neurosurgeon leaves time on his/her schedule to see emergency cases. The neurosurgeon will have received the information about your child's condition already, from not only her pediatrician, but the plastic surgeon, too. Since the plastic surgeon didn't recommend a biopsy, be comforted by the fact that if it needed one, he would have either done it or referred you to someone who could. They could have used a fine-needle biopsy if they had thought it necessary. Don't panic.
