I'm a gynecologist and have been for some years now.I was offered the job of working as a plastic surgeon performing various different male to female "sex change" operations.I declined.I personally believe no one should be allowed to alter their gender in such an extreme and unnatural manner.I find the thought of a man with a fake but nonetheless fully functional vagina terribly disturbing and the same goes for females who have "penis's".People should be allowed plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons but it should be illegal to change your sex as it just too unnatural.And at the end of the day O.K these people have no penis and from the outside it looks like they have a vagina but they ARE NOT women and never will be.Sadly I think they need to realise they never will be and get on with life O.K so they feel they are in thw rong body but if they have the operation they still have the same body.They are still men and will never be women.Also if they were really truly like women in everyway except physical features why do they all walk with the grace of an English Bulldog? They are men,will always be men and must live with it. I once had a MAN come to me because sex was painful.I thought at first it was a butch woman until I was examining him.I could see immediately HE had a fake vagina.To the trained eye there is so much difference between the fake and real and it's all in their heads that they are female Oh and medical advice over the internet on sites like this should be illegal! I have been horrified at some of the advice given in answers to women's health issues.One example today was a woman was told the hymen was INSIDE the vagina! Is it? That's news to me!

Here in the UK, it infuriates me when I hear of the NHS paying for this unnecessary op. The patient doesn't need surgery, he needs a psychiatrist, or should pay from his own pocket, not paid by the state funded NHS. Any doctor who mutilates these mentally ill patients should be struck off. You are right, they are not women, they are just men with false tits who have had their penis hacked off, and look like men in drag.
that is pretty ignorant of a doctor to say. there are people, you know, transgendered people, who are stuck in the wrong body? live and let live. i think it would be rewarding to be a doctor helping people match their true identities.

You're not a very understanding person are you? Most people who get this kind of surgery see it as a matter of life and death... being born in the wrong body can be extremely depressing. Imagine if someone put you in a dress and high heels and made you walk around in public as if everything was normal? Well that's how uncomforatble it must be for transexuals. If it makes people happy and even saves lives then what's wrong with it? It's none of your business and I think you need to learn to see things from other people's points of view.
Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it is my opinion that it is the choice of the individual, same as with abortion which is also unatural but in both cases it's up to the individual. At the end of the day, it's not hurting anyone, and if someone feels strongly enough after the counselling that they already have to go through that this is what they wish to do, denying them the opportunity will only lead to or worsen depression.

i understand what you're saying... but if people feel wrong as the sex they are born as then i mean why shouldn't they be able to have a sex change? if it's what they really want? and it isn't illegal so i don't see why people shouldn't do it?
I think it should be legal. I think your quote of they shopuld get on with life is desgusting as the reason people have sex changes if because they feel like the opposite sex and believe they where born with the wrong body parts. This make them so depressed to the point of suicide and to say well its tough, Just get on with it is a rediclous thing to say. I think anyone should be allowed it. You have the rights to your own body and you shouldent be told be law that you cannot have surgery and you must stay depressed or kill yourself because your not allowed to be who you want to be.
I am a psychologist and have been for some years now. If someone is clinically unhappy about the sex they have, one way is to physically alter their appearance. In many cases this is not the problem and an operation would do no good. I am against plastic surgery purely for cosmetic reasons because it is a never-ending concern. The problem of adeing has to be addressed through the mind.
It's not just for cosmetic reasons - people genuinely believe that they have been trapped in the wrong body. It's not something they can help!! Therefore, why should it be illegal? Chances are they're gonna end up suicidal if they don't get the help they need. It's not a spur-of-the-moment decision - people have to work through hours and hours of soul-searching and counselling before it can go ahead. I think you need to read more into the subject before you start imposing your bigoted views on the world.

And you are an educated professional who even though I accept is allowed his own thoughts I question your prejudices. I was some years ago lucky enough to know 'April Ashley' when she was Queen of Hay on Wye. She was one of the first Sex Change male to female who was in the pulic eye. She had her surgery abroad as it was in its early 'not sure if we should do this in this country' She really was a Lady born in the wrong body and in getting to know her socially it was clear she was so so happy at having corrected a Biological mistake. Sorry But it is now so well documented that Nature dosnt always get it right and if the skills and techniques are available why shouldnt we correct mistakes just the same as any other problem like cleft pallets birth marks and other birth defects.

Why should it be illegal, enough people have a culture or nationality change. Some people have cosmetic surgery to look different, so why should a gender change be illegal, just because you have a problem with it. I suppose it's good that you are a gynaecologist, and not a psychologist with an opinion such as yours!
I find it wrong that the NHS is struugling for funds yet people can get a sex change on the NHS if you want a sex change then you should fund it yourself.
Their soul is different from their bodies its pretty easy to understand that but some people suffer from ignorance. You being a so called doctor should know that the correct terminology is gender reassignment surgery. These people are only trying to align their bodies with their brain and live a normal as possible life but ignorant people who don't know any better make life unlivable and some even commit suicide because of others ignorance. Imagine if everyone was calling you a woman, if you had a female body but you have the same mind now. It wouldnt feel good trapped in that body.

All I can say is thank the Lord you are not my doctor, and he is bad enough but you are worse. I used to think all doctors were understanding and compassionate I have just discovered I was wrong.
if they want it done and can afford to pay for it let them have it done BUT i object to them getting the operation on the NHS when people with cancer are told they can not have the drugs to keep them alive. that is a ridiculous situation and should not be allowed to happen
I'm a sufferer of gender disphoria which is the proper medical term for transexuality .i was born biologically female but knew from a very early age around the age of 5 that i just didn't feel right and i tried to kill myself when i was just 12 when coming into puberty ,i started to bind my chest and always had short hair so that i didn't look like i was a girl ,that was really painful my chest skin actually split because i pulled my binding so tight ,i didn't know what transsexuality was i'd never heard of it i took an over dose of sleeping tablets(several times)because i was in such turmoil i couldn't talk to any one about this i was alone trapped in a life that i felt i didn't belong to. it wasn't until i was 18 that i knew what was wrong i was born into the wrong body i was/am transsexual,everything fell into place i went to my g.p they referred me to a counsellor who then referred me to a psychologist ,this is what every gender disphoric person has to do to make sure basically that we're sane they won't give you any treatment for gender disphoria if you belong in a mental hospital .so i was given the go ahead i started my hormone treatment which is an inter muscular injection that i will have to get every 2 weeks for the rest of my life,i now have facial hair a deep voice muscles and have had a double mastectomy which has given me a flat chest s I don't have to wear the binding anymore and i've had a very successful gender reassignment surgery which has given me the bottom half that i should have had it may not look like yours or any other guy out there but it works and it's mine and i'm proud plus i got to choose my own size , i am now more happy than i ever had because now i get to worry about just regular everyday things instead of being trapped in a body prison .no one would ever know that i was born biologically female when looking at me because i look a guy and i am a guy and i'm happy ,imagine if you had to go through what i went through just to be happy just to live and think about how you would feel if they made gender reassignment illegal ,i know i would not be alive writing this message to someone who i don't know whom i'm telling basically my life story so that maybe they could be a little more compassionate and empathetic to people who are born a little different ,it doesn't matter how i got to where i am now it should only matter about who i am today .
Absolutely. It should be outlawed. These freaks don't need a sex change, they need straight jackets. This is not an "alternative lifestyle" that they "choose" to live, it's a mental disorder.

But it is only cosmetic surgery so why should it be illegal. I personally think people should pay for it themselves however.
