Why is plastic surgery expensive?

I mean expensive compared to most other things. You can buy a cream for your face for $20, yet if you want your nose to be slightly slimmer (which no one but yourself really cares about since people are too busy living their own lives), you have to pay around $5000. That's just amazing to me, that these people can get away with their outrageous prices, which insurance doesn't even cover. Even if you have a major operation, you most likely wouldn't have to pay out of pocket fees that are THAT high. I mean if it wasn't expensive at all, our society would be in trouble since EVERYONE would be getting it, and we'd all be plastic people walking around. Then again, that's pretty much LA for you. But I don't get the expense. Can it be justified? I mean outside of hospital costs, anesthesia, etc. That alone is half the price or 1/3rd. I think the surgeons are BS"ing, it's not that complicated of a surgery compared to heart surgery, etc, they just want to profit it seems.

  1. The doctors know that people who want plastic surgery have money to waste, that is why they charge so much
  2. "They just want to profit" - so doctors shouldn't be allowed to make some money after putting all the time and money into training? Dang. Surgeries are expensive because there are a lot of things and people you need to pay for. Anesthesia (btw, why not say it's their fault for costs versus the surgeon huh??? They are doctors too). Hospital overhead and OR time. Supplies, etc. Insurance doesn't cover cosmetic surgery because the of the cost. Imagine the cost of premiums if insurance companies covered plastic surgeries! So few people would be able to afford insurance. BTW, major operations cost more than that. If you don't know, don't comment. Also, as for degree of difficulty, it's relative. Lets see a cardiothoracic surgeon do a nose job and a plastic surgeon do a heart transplant. It would be difficult for both of them! They weren't trained in every surgery.
  3. It is still surgery. They may not be transplanting a heart but they are still cutting a person open and that comes with certain dangers, like death or disfigurement. And, yes they are just trying to profit. It's how business works. I guess you could try to find a free clinic that does nose jobs at cost, but I doubt you'll find it and I don't know if you really want a surgeon who doesn't highly value his own skills.,
