Center Cosmetic Surgery

Finally a Democrat I can agree with, how about you?

A Minnesota lawmaker wants people to pay more for their nips and tucks by extending Minnesota's 6.5 percent sales tax to elective cosmetic surgery. At a hearing Monday, Rep. Phyllis Kahn, DFL-Minneapolis, said the state already taxes spa treatments and fitness programs that people use to improve their appearance, so why not procedures for the perfect nose, lips or skin? The tax could generate $7 million, she said, but have a minimal effect on Minnesota's poor or working families. "There aren't a lot of homeless people and there aren't a lot of people who don't have enough money for food who are getting optional cosmetic surgery," she said. The proposed tax would apply to hair transplants, laser hair removal, cosmetic injections and other elective procedures but not to reconstructive procedures such as those for burn or accident victims. http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/16736466.htm

  1. How moronic!
  2. cosmic surgery?!... do you know that America is at war?!?!
  3. I can't believe they weren't taxing it before! YES! Great idea, in fact a USE tax is a fabulous idea across the board!
  4. Well, I am a Democrat and I hate all taxes.
  5. uh... it's pretty much a basic luxury tax on a service... dems have always been in favor of those? maybe you agree with the dems more than you think...
  6. This is called communism. Redistribution of wealth. Taxes should be cut, not imposed on more things. And you'd actually be surprised how many middle class americans opt for cosmetic surgeries. Hell, I just got my chick some implants, and by no means am I rich.
  7. Good idea.
  8. I would support this, but again...it's democrats raising taxes. Instead of raising taxes, lets give the president the line item veto and stop the pork barrell projects.
  9. What a great idea!! It could save the schools in California.
  10. it is still a tax. By your statement you want to tax people who WORK for a living. A tax is still a tax.
  11. I need to remember that name -- Phyllis Kahn -- finally, a liberal with a brain who came up with a good idea!
  12. sounds like a plan to me. if it passes and becomes law more power to Rep. Kahn.
  13. A vanity tax. Good idea. Be vain pay a tax not vain don't pay- your choice.
  14. No. She is still a liberal, like all democrats. TAX TAX TAX, even after you are dead. Bill Clinton's death tax? Remember that one? You aren't even alive, still the liberals want to tax you to death! Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does it?
  15. Perfect. That is just what I wanted politicians to do and I'm a Democrat.
  16. HOLY COW!! That's a great idea. They could raise the tax on almost all luxury items, i.e., cars with MSRP over $50k, cigars, cigarettes, booze (but not cheap wine and beer as that is the poor man's drink), household amenities like swimming pools, home gymnasiums, etc., broadband internet access, cable tv, satellite tv, cell phones...the list goes on and on. Let those with the money bear the burden.
  17. Interesting! what would the proceeds be used for?
