- Perhaps the doctor is not board certified. Board certification is a voluntary process that many doctors undergo, at great expense of time, stress and money. We are evaluated by our peers in written and oral exams, and surgeons may have to present some of their cases for review. It is always a good idea to do a little checking on a surgeon. Although board certification is not guarantee of good results, it will at least let you know that the doctor has met some standards.
