At the age of 21, is it okay to get plastic surgery without informing my family?
It will be one procedure that I've wanted done for the past 7 years. It would be noticeable only to myself and will be done by a board certified surgeon. I've really looked into this. What do you think of me not telling my family? It's something that I'd like to keep as a personal decision. I don't want to feel guilty or like I've made a bad choice by telling my family. If they were openminded, I would let them know- but they're not, and their opinions will hurt me, considering the fact that I'll be changing my body. It's something that I've really wanted since I was 14, and I don't want their opinions / judgements weighing on my mind.

- You only have to be 18..Your an adult at 18
- yeah. at the age of 18 youre allowed to make your own decisions for yourself.
- You are of legal age and can do as you please and not have to tell them.
- you don't have to inform anyone.
- yes
- You need to think good and hard before you do this. Plastic surgery can't be reversed. Is having this change done going to change your life? Are you happy within yourself at the moment? I think that you should be able to look in the mirror and be proud of what you look like, whatever you look like.
- You can make the decision for yourself, but if you are going to be completely put under for the procedure, I would want my family to be aware that I was at least having surgery. I had minor cosmetic surgery when I was about 22. I did tell some of my family- one sister & my parents. I didn't really want their opinions about what I was doing. My parents thought I was nuts for having elective surgery but I am really glad that I did it. I was quite miserable for a few days & did need someone to help me a bit so I did need some help. If you have a support system to help you, you can not tell then. If you want to chat some more about this, you can e-mail me. Good luck! Oh, did you talk to other patients of the doctor you have chosen to make certain their work is good? Just a thought!
- youre an adult you dont need your families consent or approval for anything
- Sure it's okay (it's your body), but it's obvious that you really care about what your family thinks, otherwise you wouldn't be asking this question. Since you are being pulled in two directions, you could benefit by seeing a counselor or therapist before you schedule the surgery. You'll have an opportunity to clarify your feelings.
- Well you are an adult and you shouldnt feel bad for doing something without informing everyone. Its no ones business except yours. Think about it this way if your mother/aunt/cousin had this procedure done should they feel obligated to tell you just because you are family? No they wouldnt. You are now just another adult in the family that makes personal decisions for herself.
- well its up too you your an adult .but i think you should let a family member know so they can go with you. its something you dont wanna go about alone .or tell a friend or someone you can confide in. this is a big decision for you too have too go through by yourself. good luck on what ever you chose!
